More than 10,000 buildings collapsed after Java quake

The National Disaster Management Body (BNPB) reported that as of noon Thursday it has recorded more than 10,000 collapsed buildings after a powerful earthquake hit the southern part of West Java on Wednesday.

BNPB said that the collapsed buildings, which includes houses, schools, offices and places of worship, were located in 10 regencies in West Java and one in Central Java.

The regencies are Cianjur, Garut, Sukabumi, Tasikmalaya, Bandung, West Bandung, Bogor, Kuningan, Ciamis and Banjar City in West Java and Cilacap in Central Java.

More than 3,100 people have been forced to take refuge due to the disaster, the body said. BNPB also reported more than 13,000 lightly damaged structures.

The death toll from the 7.3-magnitude earthquake rose to 46 on Thursday, the government agency said.
