PEKANBARU: A group of elephants trampled a guard Thursday night at a palm oil plantation in the Indragiri Hulu regency, Riau province, killing him.

Head of the Rengat Nature Conservation Agency, Edi Susanto, said the 25-year-old victim, Rinto Lumbangaol, and his wife lived in a makeshift house on the plantation.

"About 15 elephants ran amok and crushed the victim's home. Rinto told his wife to run for help but when the villagers arrived, Rinto had died from his injuries," Edi said on Friday.

The plantation is located in a known habitat area for wild elephants." - JP
