Quake causes Rp 31b worth of damage in Cilacap

The Cilacap regency administration in Central Java claims the Sept. 2 earthquake that struck the western part of Java has caused more than Rp 30 billion (US$3 million) in damage.

Hari Winarno, a top official at the regency’s Disaster Management Body, told tempointeraktif.com on Friday evening that at least 445 houses had collapsed and more than 800 others were severely damaged following the 7.3-magnitude quake.

The agency recorded light damage to around 1,445 houses, five severely damaged places of worship and five collapsed markets.

More than 6,000 people have been forced to find temporary accomodation following the quake in the re-gency.

Rescue workers pulled several bodies from the rubble of a giant landslide Friday in Cianjur, West Java, lift-ing the death toll from the powerful earthquake to 64. Dozens more people are still missing, feared dead.

The number of houses recorded as destroyed or damaged in the quake,  which was centered off the southern coast of Java Island, jumped to more than 87,000, the national Disaster Management Agency said.
