55 Riau councilors sworn in

Fifty-five new members of the Riau Legislative Council were sworn in for the 2009-2014 term, during a plenary meeting Thursday in Medan.
The Golkar Party’s Johar Firdaus was named the interim council speaker, after his party netted the most seats at the council (14) in the legislative elections.
The Democratic Party’s Raja Thamsir was appointed the interim deputy speaker, with his party clinching the second-most number of seats (eight).
Home Minister Mardiyanto said he hoped the new councilors would continue working together with the provincial administration on development programs.
