55 new Riau council members sworn in

PEKANBARU: Fifty-five new members from the Riau legislative council were sworn in for the 2009-2014 term, during a plenary meeting on Sunday in Pekanbaru.
The Golkar Party's local senior politician Johar Firdaus was named the new council speaker, after his party netted the most seats at the council (14) in the April 9 legislative elections.
The Democratic Party's elected councilor Raja Thamsir was appointed deputy speaker, with his party clinching the second-most number of seats (8). - JP
