The House of Representatives is holding a plenary session today to endorse three bills, including the controversial electricity draft law.
The House’s agenda of the day issued by the House’s Secretary General says the lawmakers will respectively pass the environmental protection bill, which will replace the 1997 environment law; the electricity bill which will substitute the 2002 law after the Constitutional Court revoked it in 2004; and the bill on the film industry.
The environmental protect bill provides the state minister for the environment office the long-sought authority to arrest polluters and revoke business permits.
Public challenge, however, awaits the electricity bill. Labor unions, including the one that groups employees of state electricity company PLN, have threatened to go on strike once it is passed into law. (hdt)
