Football Association of Indonesia chairman Nurdin Halid and his entourage held talks on Tuesday with Leoz Nicolas, the president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) in Ascuncion, to rally support from the regional soccer body for Indonesia’s quest to host the 2022 World Cup.

“The President of CONMEBOL said Indonesia deserved a chance to host the World Cup, because of the country’s long history of soccer. They appreciated our bid,” Nurdin said in a press statement made available to Antara news agency.

Indonesia will have to convince 25 executive committee members of the world soccer governing body FIFA to win its bid. Nicolas is an ex-officio member of the executive committee due to his position as CONMEBOL president. Other members include FIFA president Sepp Blatter and his senior deputy Julio H Grondona of Argentina

Nurdin also met the president of Paraguay’s soccer body, Juan Angel Napout, who promised to provide consultancy to Indonesia on how to win support from other FIFA executive committee members.

Indonesian soccer officials are scheduled to meet FIFA official Grondona in his capacity as the Argentina Football Association head, and other leaders of national soccer bodies across South America, as part of the World Cup hosting campaign.
