Teachers and students have been asked to be more vigilant and keep an eye out for terrorists recruiting youths into their cells.

Authorities brought together around 1,000 teachers and high school students from all over the city on Wednesday, to brief them about the terror threats still lingering in the capital, especially after the July bombings.

“Terrorist cells may try to recruit students. You have to understand terrorism is an extraordinary crime against humanity. Stay informed about this issue and develop a sense of vigilance in order to limit the terrorists’ movements,” City Police chief Insp. Gen. Wahyono said.

“Education and character building are important to prevent young generations from getting involved in deviant acts that could lead to terrorism, because they [terrorists] will continue to recruit more followers, especially youths,” he said.

During the briefing, participants were given an update on terrorist activities in Indonesia and abroad.

Said Agil Siradj, an Islamic scholar from Nahdatul Ulama, talked to the students about the terrorists’ misconceptions around jihad or the holy war.

Wahyono said the fight against terrorism should focus on preemptive steps, including preventing more youths from being indoctrinated with deviant teachings.
