JAKARTA: Three individuals posing as policemen tricked two maids in a house in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon, stealing Rp 20 million (US$2,000) in cash, a handful of jewelry worth Rp 400 million and dozens of cell phones.

City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Chrysnanda Dwi Laksana said the robbery took place when the owner of the house, businessman Leman Ismantara, was out running errands.

"The robbers told the maids, Dian and Zaenab, that they were police officers and were there to meet Pak Leman," Chrysnanda said.

The maids told them their boss was not at home.

"The suspects then insisted they would wait for him at the house," he said.

As soon as the maids went to the kitchen to make some drinks for the visitors, the suspects grabbed the women, bound their hands with tape and gagged them.

The criminals took away a safe box containing cash, 50 cell phones, and jewelry.

The maids have been questioned at the Setiabudi Police, Chrysnanda said. - JP
