Mira slams draft law on the film industry

JP/Arief Suhardiman

JAKARTA: As one of the leading figures renowned for helping revive the Indonesian movie industry, Mira Lesmana deserves to be listened to in her powerful criticisms of the current draft law on the film industry.

Among the points attracting her ire is the quota set for local movies, which would lead to mere quantity but not quality, Mira said, as quoted by newsportal detikhot.com on Tuesday.

“There is no point in setting a 60 percent quota for Indonesian movies,” said the producer of widely acclaimed movie Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Warriors).

“It will only serve as justification for those seeking mere profits and not thinking about the quality of the movies they produce.”

The current draft of the law stipulates that 60 percent of films distributed in Indonesia be locally made.

Although on paper it might look like the government is trying to support Indonesian movies, it will not have a positive impact but will simply bore Indonesian audiences with low-quality movies, Mira added.

“When people are flooded with low-quality movies, they will simply walk away from Indonesian movies and it will make things even more difficult for us,” she added.

In addition to pointing out the flaws in the current draft of the film law, Mira also criticized Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik for his apparent lack of understanding of the industry.

“Don’t talk about the film [industry] if you know nothing, let alone claim to be playing a part in reviving the Indonesian movie world.” — JP
