Four deputy chairman of the Corruption Eradication
Commission (KPK) are due at police headquarters for questioning on Friday after
being summoned as part of an investigation into corruption at the very
department responsible for stopping it.
The police plan to question KPK deputy chairmen Bibit Samad Rianto, Chandra M
Hamzah, M Jasin and Haryono Umar, who failed to appear for their first summon
on Tuesday.
The case came to light with testimony given by suspended KPK chief Antasari
Ashar that KPK executives accepted bribes from PT Masaro Radiokom to drop its
investigation into the telecommunications company. Atasari is on trial for his
role in an unrelated murder.
As evidence, Antasari gave police a tape of a recorded conversation between
himself and director of Masaro, Anggoro Widjojo, in Singapore last November.
On the recording, Anggoro is heard discussing giving Rp 5.1 billion (US$515,000)
to senior KPK officers so they would stop their investigation into his company’s
dealings with the Forestry Ministry, which allegedly caused the state losses of
Rp 13 billion.
