Rp1.8b worth of illegal cosmetics confiscated in Yogyakarta

The Yogyakarta branch of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency
(BPOM) has confiscated tens of thousands of illegal cosmetic products worth Rp
1.8 billion (US$18.4 million) in raids over the past three days.
“We confiscated the products from four places in Sleman and Yogyakarta
following an investigation into 15 locationd where illegal cosmetics were
allegedly sold,” Zualimah, head of investigations at the agency, said Friday as
quoted by state news agency Antara.
A hardware shop, a hair salon, a beauty shop equipment shop and a warehouse
were all raided.
“From the first three places we confiscated illegal hair treatment products,”
she said.
From the warehouse the agency confiscated Rp 1.3 billion of illegal shampoo and
soap, which were distributed through an online multi-level marketing operation.
According to Law No. 23/1992 on Health, distributing illegal cosmetic products
carries a maximum sentence of seven years in jail and fines of up to Rp 140
million.
