Comments: Australia drags Garuda to court

em>The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) has filed a lawsuit against national carrier Garuda Indonesia over allegations that it may have conspired with other airlines to fix air freight cost prices. The lawsuit comes as part of a fully fledged investigation that started last year with allegations of possible price fixing involving major players in the airline industry.

Your comments:
This is just a way to bring down the competition, since their airline is not doing very well at all.

Airfares in Australia are dirt cheap compared to what they used to be. They're even cheaper than bus or train fares, in many cases. Garuda should be taken to court for inadequate maintenance and safety checks on its aircraft.

My wife is a true neolib--Sept. 6, p. 1

I hate shopping with my wife. Don't get me wrong. I love doing things together, including walking the malls and I don't mind accompanying her trying different shoes in many different stores over the weekend. It's when she haggles over the prices that I wished I was invisible.

It's not only embarrassing, but it's cruel as she is dealing with small traders who most likely work on slim margins.

The worst part is that we always end up having a heated argument later in the car, between the socialist-me and the capitalist-her. She always wins.

Your comments:
Eric, you are a lucky man to have her as your wife-cum-home-finance-minister. You should thank your mother-in-law for that stroke of good luck.

I think if you look at it, you won't want her to go the other end of the scale with your money, do you? I suggest you hand over all your money matters to her and not look too much into that area, knowing it will be well handled. Best of all, look at the brighter side always.

I'm with you there. I was so annoyed one time when my mom haggled over the price of some already cheap home equipment in Mangga Dua, that I told her after the transaction proceeded that I bet in less than six months the thing will go off for no particular reason, and be damned if it did.

I'm always reluctant to bargain; any time I asked for an offer, I compare it not against the lowest possible price, but against the market price. If it's slightly lower or even on par, it's good enough for me. So far it's working out for me.

I don't mind paying a little extra to the traditional trader. In my experience, the smile from the trader and sincere gratitude that occurs from the transaction satisfies both of us, and is much more rewarding than the cents saved from hard bargaining.

Hahahahahaha, we obviously have the same experience. I'd rather say you are lucky, because you have a very smart minister of finance. Don't worry, as long as she is still your wife. Whatever she is.
