Police and customs and excise officials at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle a package containing two firearms, police said Friday.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Chrysnanda Dwi Laksana said an employee of a shipping company was the first to detect the package at the airport's cargo section on Thursday.

"The employee was suspicious of the package during an X-ray check," Chrysnanda said.

When opening the box, the employee found two Beretta handguns and two magazines, all without supporting documents, Chrysnanda said.

The sender’s address on the package turned out to be false, while the recipient’s address was the North Sumatra capital Medan.

“We’ve sent the guns to our labs for further examination, while detectives are now investigating the sender and recipient," Chrysnanda said. (bbs)
