The Malang-Surabaya train route is expected to return to normal on Thursday after the derailment of a cargo train in the Lawang area of Malang, East Java.

Kompas.com reported that officials were still awaiting a special device from Surakarta, Central Java to move seven derailed cars.

Some 2,000 passengers from the Panataran, Malang Express and Tawang Alun trains failed to depart on Wednesday because of the incident.

Spokesman for the state railway company Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) for region VII apologized to the passengers for the departure cancellation, saying his office would reimburse their tickets.

Malang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Edi Sukaryanto said police had questioned cargo train driver Sudarwanto and his assistant, who fled to Surabaya after the incident.

The train derailment killed one man.
