JAKARTA: While most Indonesian Muslims celebrated Idul Fitri on Sunday, dozens of Kedunglurah village residents in the East Javanese town of Trenggalek observed the Islamic holiday on Monday.

"We believe the first day of Syawal month falls today *Monday*," local cleric Zamroji Asyhari told Antara news agency on Monday. Idul Fitri marks an end to fasting month of Ramadan.

He said he would lead a prayer at his house Monday to commemorate the holiday.

"We did not celebrate Idul Fitri on Sunday as we were not sure the holiday fell that day. Besides, we failed to see new moon," he said.

He said when the majority of Muslims in the country organized an Idul Fitri's eve parade, he and his followers gathered for a night prayer. - JP
