North Maluku Governor Thaib Armaiyn says the provincial capital will move from Ternate to Sofifi next January.
Thaib said Wednesday the move should have gone through in September last year as part of his priority agenda for his first 100 days in office, but infrastructure development in the new capital had been slow.
Power lines and a water network in Sofifi will only be completed in the next two months, Thaib told Antara.
A 1999 law on the formation of North Maluku province stipulates the capital must be moved to Sofifi, in the Tidore Islands, within five years of the law coming into force.
In a show of commitment to the law, the provincial legislative council has held plenary meetings to make decisions in Sofifi. The governor also moved Independence Day celebrations to Sofifi last August.
