JEMBER: Three people have been reported to have died in traffic accidents during this year's Idul Fitri homebound exodus in Jember.

Head of Traffic Accident Unit of the Jember Police, Second Insp. Suhartanto, said Tuesday his office had recorded 10 traffic accidents during the exodus, claiming three lives and injuring 24 others, one of whom was severely injured.

"Dead victims were promptly sent to the morgues while the injured ones were sent to the nearest hospitals or health centers," he said.

Most accidents, he added, occurred at prone-to-accident road segments.

The financial loss was predicted to reach tens of millions.

Human error, he said, so far had been blamed as the cause of most of the accidents.

"Many of the travellers ignored the traffic signboards and the crowd. They kept riding in high speed, which led to accidents." - JP
