Jakarta to apply single ID number system next year

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said Friday that the capital is ready to apply single identification number system next year.

“We will try the system next year,” he said in Jakarta, as quoted by kompas.com.

In 2004, the Home Ministry announced to the public that Indonesia would give each citizen a Single Identity Number (SIN) for use in various administrative systems records and documents,

Fauzi said that the system was needed to organize citizens' data better, making it more difficult for people to have multiple ID cards (KTP), and to pare down civil registry bureaucracy.

The system is currently under trial in Yogyakarta, Padang in West Sumatra; Makassar in South Sulawesi and Denpasar in Bali.
