At least 77 people were killed and 109 others injured in traffic accidents seven days prior to and four days after the Idul Fitri holiday across East Java, an officer says.
The provincial police chief for operations Sr. Comr. Abdul Madjid Tawil said Friday most of the accidents were a result of human error and lack of adherence to traffic rules
“The death toll may increase as the return journey of holidaymakers will peak at the weekend,” he said.
In the latest fatal accident, seven people were killed after a car collided head-on with a bus in Tuban on Thursday. Later in the day, an accident between two motorbikes on the same north coast road claimed the lives of four of their riders.
”We have asked our traffic officers to pay more attention to the route due to its vulnerability to accidents,” Abdul said.
