SMS: Aceh's stoning bylaw

A- A A+

And I suggest the government introduce this punishment soon. Don't let more earthquakes jolt Indonesia because of what Indonesians always do.

Perhaps this is a sign that Indonesia will become a devolved set of states? It would seem to me, as an outsider who once lived there, that Indonesia will find it ever harder to balance the many different groups within it.

Aceh and Bali are both examples of this inherent tension and it should not be forgotten that "Indonesia" was largely the product of historical power struggles rather than any inbuilt sense of unity or cohesion, much like my very own United Kingdom of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, where faith had a part to play too I might add.

I have to cancel my plan to visit Aceh so that I will not become victim to the stoning bylaw.

According to an old saying "a law which doesn't bring justice is not a law". It is flawed indeed! Civil disobedience is a must for such a law.

I think it should be remembered that this law was the last passed by the old DPRA which is dominated by the national political parties, not the newly-elected DPRA, the majority of which is from the local political parties.

GAM is opposed to this law. We should be asking the national political parties like Golkar, who had the majority in the parliament, why their members supported this law and if this is the direction Golkar is headed in the future.

It is a shame that these things are tolerated. It will bring no good to the people there and internationally, it will destroy the reputation of this beautiful country. It is a shame what is going on in Aceh.

Stoning somebody to death anybody is barbarous and disgusting, even more so when it is the punishment for something such as adultery. So what will go totally unpunished in Medan will mean a gruesome death just a 100 km to the north?

The Indonesian police recently detained and in a few cases killed Islamic terrorists.

Why? Because those terrorists were trying to destroy Indonesia and turn it into an Arab-style Islamic theocracy.

Just like the Parliament of Aceh is trying to do with the province. The central government must act now and end this autonomy gone perverse.
