College film festival a place to learn, appreciate movies

To create room to express students' appreciation of film and also a place to learn more about it, the first film festival for college students will take place from Oct. 5 to 10.

Organized by the Cooperating Body of Indonesian Art Institutes (BKSPTSI), the festival will cover the theme of exploring the root of identities.

Tomy W. Taslim, one of the festival's curators, said film was an artwork of human creation, feeling and will, made to also identify the past, present and future.

"Based on that, there was the idea to create a space to discuss the identity, film and humanity itself because there is a strong relation among them that can be explored," he said.

Tomy said that through the festival, students were also expected to be able to take part in developing the country's film community and advancing the industry.

"When the community and the contribution from students grow well together, this can be an important driver for the country's film industry," he said.

Students majoring in art and interested in joining the festival should submit their fiction or documentary films.

The submitted films will be assessed by a board of curators. They include Ki Hartanto, Subagjo Budisantoso, Kusen Dony Hermansyah and Tomy.

The festival will be more like an exhibition, Tomy said, so after being assessed, the films will be screened over a few days. Besides the exhibition, the festival will also include a workshop on solving problems clouding the movie industry.

The workshop is expected to network campuses that do not have an art department, both at home and abroad.
