A fire razed a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation belonging to state-owned electricity firm, PT PLN, in Cililitan, East Jakarta on Tuesday.

The fire resulted in blackouts to parts of South and East Jakarta. PLN’s general manager for the Greater Jakarta branch, Purnomo Willy, said the power outages were occurring in Cipinang, Pulomas, Duren Tiga, Mampang, Manggarai and Cawang, among other suburbs.

It took seven fire engines about 35 minutes to extinguish the blaze that broke out on Jl. Mayjend Sutoyo at around 1:30 a.m.

Cililitan resident Asiah, told tempointeraktif.com that she heard three explosions from the office that distributes electricity across Java-Bali including the Jakarta-Banten region.

"We are still investigating the problem,” Purnomo said. “This will take some time as the fire occurred at a high-voltage power house."

He said he did not know when power to these areas would resume. PLN is presently trying to supply power to affected regions using other electricity sources.

Meanwhile, people passing the sites are slowing to look, causing traffic congestion in the area. (ewd)
