State airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II has temporarily closed Minangkabau Airport in Padang due to damage to the facility from the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that rocked the West Sumatra capital Wednesday.

Edward Silooy, administrator of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, told Antara two flights to Padang had been canceled following the quake.

“One of the planes had taken off, but returned to Jakarta an hour later because the damaged Minangkabau Airport was reported to be inaccessible,” Edward said.

There are 10 regular flights from Jakarta to Padang every day.

Edward said Angkasa Pura had sent a team to evaluate the damage to Minangkabau Airport.

"The team will only file a report tomorrow, so we’re not sure how long the flight suspension will last,” he said.
