The death toll from the major earthquake that jolted West Sumatra on Wednesday has reached 1,100, with officials expecting the number to climb.

"I'm afraid that thousands of people are still trapped under the rubble," UN humanitarian chief John Holmes told reporters on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

Head of the Health Ministry’s crisis center Rustam Pakaya predicted that the death toll in the West Sumatra quake would equal the number of people killed in the Yogyakarta and Central Java in 2006, which claimed around 5,000 lives.

As of Friday telecommunication network has not worked normally while many roads have been damaged, disrupting transmission of data related to the disaster to Jakarta.
