City to spend US$ 20 million to dredge rivers
JAKARTA: The city administration will spend about US$20.28 million to begin dredging 64 areas along canals and rivers to anticipate for annual floods. ,
Budi Widiantoro, head of the City Public Works Agency, said his office has begun dredging last week and planned to finish removing the silt on Dec. 15. | Mon, 10/05/2009 1:25 PM
"The mud removed may contain up to 1.5 million cubic meters of water," Budi said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Floods in Jakarta have been having a worse impact each year since 2002, as Jakarta has developed one-sidedly without proper water-absorption areas, while a lack of awareness in waste management has caused trash to pile up along river paths.
Budi said the dredging would not prevent more flooding, but would lessen the impact of floods. - JP
