The number of newcomers coming to Jakarta after the Idul Fitri holidays dropped by 21 percent to 69,000 from 88,473 last year, a city government official said Monday.

Edison Sianturi, a senior official at the city administration, said the data were obtained from 29 locations such as bus terminals, railway stations and airports.

He said 3.064 million people traveled from Jakarta to their hometowns during the Idul Fitri holidays, while the number of those who came back to Jakarta after the holidays hit 3.1 million.

"We will carry out an operation soon to check newcomers’ identities," he said.
