TANGERANG: Police in Tangerang have named fire truck driver Sarmili a suspect in last week's death of a 9-year-old boy.
Sarmili will be charged with negligence, after his unattended fire truck hit Muhamad Helgiris and killed him while firefighters were putting out a blaze in Ciledug, Tangerang municipality.
"We investigated three firefighters and found only Sarmili was liable because he was the truck driver," Ciledug Police chief Insp. Agus Windarto said Wednesday.
"The driver should not have left the fire truck while the engine was on," said Tangerang Police detective chief for general crimes, Comr. Budhi Herdi Susyanto, adding the driver would not be arrested yet pending "some considerations".
Diding Iskandar, acting head of the Tangerang municipal fire department, said all firefighters had followed the standard operating procedures.
"When extinguishing a fire, the truck's engine must remain on," he said. - JP
