Jakarta airport foils Rp 1b drug trafficking attempt

Customs and excise office at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Tangerang said Wednesday they had foiled an attempt by a Malaysian national to smuggle into the country crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 1 billion (US$106,000) from Hong Kong.

Evy Suhartantyo, the office spokesman, said that the officers apprehended the suspect as he arrived at the airport on Tuesday night at around 8 p.m.

“The suspect's passport says that he is a Malaysian born in Penang on June 6, 1982,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

The suspects carry half a kilogram of meth on each of the soles of his shoes.

Last week, customs and excise officers at Polonia International Airport in Medan, North Sumatra,  foiled an attempt by a local man to smuggle into the country crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 8 billion (US$800,000) from Penang, Malaysia.
