JAKARTA: Wearing a red kebaya, actress Rachel Maryam Sayidina had a smile firmly fixed on her face as she read out her oath during her recent swearing-in as a new member of the House of Representatives.

In high spirits, the 29-year-old member of the Great Indonesian Movement Party (Gerindra) said she would fight for a local-based education curriculum following her assignment to the House's Commission X, which oversees education, tourism and arts and culture.

"I will work on establishing a school system that is based on local material," said the former model. A school with a local-based curriculum, Rachel added, will also have to "accommodate local potential that can be found around the school".

Rachel also says she will make efforts to support Indonesian products through policies that favor local players.

"I will also fight for the patent rights of Indonesian products so that they will be acknowledged by internationally," said the award-winning actress, who has appear in several movies, including Eliana, Eliana, Janji Joni (Joni's Promise) and Arisan (The Gathering).

Although Rachel believes that these efforts won't be easy, she added with a smile, "I'm eager to face all possible obstacles, and will see them as challenges instead." - JP
