Beaches and shopping malls were packed with visitors on Thursday as Balinese families celebrated Manis Galungan by treating their children to a day of leisure and relaxation.

Manis Galungan falls the day after Galungan.

Traditionally, Balinese Hindu families spend Manis Galungan visiting their neighbors, relatives and friends.

During the visits they trade traditional cakes and ask for forgiveness for any wrongdoings they have committed against each other.

In recent years, many families spend the morning of Manis Galungan in tourist destinations and make the visit in the evening.

Galungan, which fell on Wednesday, celebrated the victory of dharma (virtue) over adharma (vice), is one of the Balinese Hindu's most joyous religious festivals. It is observed twice a year.

In Denpasar, families flocked to Padanggalak, Sanur, Sindu and Mertasari beaches since early in the morning. They bathed in the calm waters while children used the time to create sandcastles.

The families ended their leisurely morning with simple meals like fish satay or traditional salad tipat santok, which are sold in rustic food stalls that line the beaches.

Similar scenes could be seen in Lebih beach in Gianyar regency.

However, most visitors opted to spend their time enjoying the meals rather than frolicking in the water.

"We came here specifically to enjoy Lebih beach's renowned fish satay," said Made Puspawati, who had travelled from Denpasar with his family.

Throngs of visitors also packed several shopping malls in downtown Denpasar, such as Tiara Dewata, Matahari Duta Plaza and Ramayana Bali Mall.

Most visitors went directly to the malls' game centers, where the parents let their children have a lengthy playtime with various toys and game machines.
