Hundreds of people rushed out of a shopping mall in the West Java town of Cianjur as a 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the western tip of Java and eastern tip of Sumatra on Friday.

“We are traumatized by the powerful quake that devastated Padang,” a supermarket employee, Hesti, told Antara.

The tremor caused a wall of the Indonesian Journalists Association building on Jl. Siliwangi to crack.

In Bandung the quake was felt for about one minute, sparking panic among the hundreds of attendants of Yogya Kepatihan shopping center. A employee, Nia, said he fled the four-story building after seeing a cabinet sway.

Thousands of people streamed onto Jl. Kapatihan and Jl. Dewi Sartika to wait for safety clearance from building operators.

Cianjur is located about 100 kilometers south of Jakarta, while Bandung is about 130 kilometers southeast of the capital city.
