Surabaya municipal administration has allocated Rp 1.1 billion (US$117,000) to help 11 government offices build smoking rooms as the city braces for enforcement of a regional ordinance on smoking ban on Thursday.
The bylaw, which was enacted on Oct. 22, 2008, gives operators of public facilities permission to provide smoking rooms.
Head of the Surabaya City Development Planning Board, Tri Rismaharini, said Wednesday the municipal would soon disburse assistance to six offices, with the remaining five offices receiving the money in 2010.
Each office will receive Rp 100 million to build a smoking room and equipment such as smoke blower and air cleaner.
The first six offices to receive the aid are the Education Agency, the Sanitation Agency, the Public Works Agency, the Public Relations Agency, the Development Supervisory Agency and the Capital Investment and Service Coordination Board.
Risma said the offices were given priority as they deal with a lot of people every day.
