A suspect caught smuggling methamphetamine through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport attempted to commit suicide after he was arrested.
“He has been treated at a hospital after attempting to slit his wrists,” said Anwar Supriyadi, a director general from the customs and excise office, during a press conference on Wednesday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Customs and excise officers thwarted the plot to smuggle a total of 26.8 kilograms and 22.8 liters of crystal and liquid methamphetamine, respectively, worth Rp 102 billion (US$10.8 million) at the airport on Monday and Tuesday.
The drugs were carried by ten Iranians, eight of them women, on four separate flights.
According to Customs and Excise office records, 18 smuggling attempts have been foiled by officials this year, compared to 15 cases recorded last year.
