Loopholes in campaign funding regulations: ICW

JAKARTA: Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) found some loopholes parties could exploit in articles covering campaign funding in the 2007 General Elections Law, the 2008 Legislative Elections Law and the 2008 Presidential Election Law.
"There are many *unidentified' donations because regulation limiting the campaign donation is not effective," ICW's political corruption division Ibrahim Zuhdhi Fahmy Badoh said on Wednesday.
He added that the campaign funding reporting mechanism in those three laws also hampered public access to the report.
Therefore, he recommended the government improve regulations dealing with campaign funding to ensure public access and accountability.
"It should be possible to hand down punishments on campaign funding violations after the general elections," he said. - JP
