SURABAYA: Judges from the Surabaya District Court sentenced Kedurus slaughterhouse chief Suharto and technical division staff officer Susanto to six months' imprisonment.

The two defendants were also fined Rp 5 million (US$530) each, or ordered to serve an additional three months in prison.

The panel of judges said the evidence, disclosed during the trial, had proved both Suharto and Susanto were guilty of intentionally disposing of dangerous and poisonous substances in the Surabaya River.

Their deeds could have endangered the environment and threatened people's health as well as their lives.

The judges said the two officers had broken Article 5 (1) of the 2004 law on water resources and violated Article 55 (1) of the Criminal Code.

Environment watchdog Prigi Arisandi said the sentence was a positive sign for environmental law enforcement. - JP
