This is a comment on "US hails Jakarta's environmental protection efforts, (the Post, Oct. 21).

I'm sorry, but did I miss something with Jakarta, or Indonesia, for that matter moving forward on environmental issues?

Let's see, we have nine million vehicles on the road on a daily basis of which most don't meet emission-reduction standards.

Where most Asian countries have banned two-stroke motorbikes the ever present bajai spews toxic matter into the air in ridiculous quantities. Couple this with the angkots' and big trucks that crowd metropolitan Jakarta and it's a far stretch from being progressive.

I really don't know how President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) could lead a conference on climate issues in Pittsburg last month when Jakarta ranks number 2 on the list of the world's most polluted cities.

I'm honestly waiting for the day when I can tip my hat and say Jakarta/Indonesia is moving forward with climate, infrastructure, and social issues. The reality is it's not! There is no concrete forethought into making this city environmentally friendly.

Maybe the governor should have taken Ms. Jackson for a walk to see the cities broken sidewalks (if you can call them that), unfinished monorail towers, and for a wiff of bajai belch.
