SMS: SBY's priorities

A- A A+

Your suggestion on the priorities of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his second five-year term.

Show to the majority of the people who elected him that he is a real statesman, not merely a politician. Do not bow to the pressure of opportunistic politicians.

Yudhoyono has the chance to be a great leader for Indonesia, who can bring back the dignity and sovereignty of this country and create welfare for the people.

On the other hand he may become a mediocre leader who brings nothing to the country.

Yudhoyono should focus on the improvement of education. He should also pay attention to the fate of poor people and facilitate education for their children, particularly if the children have good performance in schools.

President SBY has a much clearer mandate this time around and, we all hope, more reliable support from his number two.

He should use this authority to make clear that the republic comes first and that moves to undermine the Constitution by regional and religious interest groups will not be tolerated.

Our best wishes to the new President and his Cabinet in helping to tackle climate change, one of the greatest challenges of our time. Indonesia is a warm, and friendly country and has so much natural beauty on offer for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike. Good luck on rising to the challenge!

First, congratulations to SBY for his second five-year term as Indonesian President. According to him, Indonesia will play a greater role in global and regional politics.

We have to be strong not only economically but especially militarily, so every one of our voices is respected by the international community. Looking at the composition of members of the incoming Cabinet, obviously this is a big coalition from many political parties which will be very safe for SBY with no significant opposition within his second term.

But this also means there will not be any drastic political measures in this five years. He just wants everything to be stable and safe during his last term. Back to the issue of being strong with the economy, his ministers who will be responsible for managing our country economy can be said to be mostly the right people in the right place.

But in the field of military, I suggest Yudhoyono pay stronger attention by appointing a deputy defense minister or junior defense minister who is an active or retired general to assist the defense minister (who is a civilian). By this, we hope our military will grow stronger within five years under President SBY's leadership.

Only with strong military we will be respected by neighboring countries, and play a greater role in regional and international arenas.

Yudhoyono's inauguration for a second term as the Indonesian President augurs well for ASEAN, Asia Pacific and the world - showing that the Indonesian people can be counted on to elect an honest and hard-working leader to lead Indonesia to greater glory.
