It began in 2006 when some guys from Kuala Lumpur - with a huge passion for music, arts, design and photography - started a magazine: Junk.
Junk highlights music all across Southeast Asia, covering good independent music across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Phi-lippines and, of course, Indonesia.
To make it even sexier, they offer a music compilation as a bonus in each edition.
Sometimes the compilation helps bands to achieve recognition outside their country, in turn also promoting the magazine.
From Indonesia, names like Mocca, Goodnight Electric, or Ballads of the Clich* were among the early materials they released.
After a few years hanging around in the circus, they have come up with something new and big, Junksounds Award, which is a music award aimed to show some love to regional bands that have been very influential for people over the year.
This year, the award enters its second year.
"The nominees come from or are based in the five regional countries in Junk's focus: Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines," explains April Kuan, managing director of Junk.
"The aim of Junksounds Awards is to recognize and give credits to some of the best and most talented music makers in the Southeast Asia region."
This year's award includes our local bands The S.I.G.I.T, Monkey to Millionaire, Endah N' Rhesa, The Trees and the Wild, and Monday Math Class as nominees.
"Our first Junksounds Awards was launched in October 2008 and garnered over 10,000 votes in the span of approximately two months. This year, we have managed to achieve 20,000 votes in the first two days. We still can't believe it ourselves, but we have the nominated acts, their labels and their fans to thank for the very encouraging support," April said.
You can support and help our comrades who compete for this award by voting on sites.junkonline.net/junksounds/.
