Jakarta Metal City

A- A A+

A humiliatingly hilarious Japanese movie I watched several weeks ago had the lead character say this to a bunch of friends at the opening scene: "no music, no dream".

And he did follow through. Though his heart goes to mellow, girly, ear torturing love songs, he chose to put on scary makeup and satanic costumes singing and playing heavy riffs in a Swedish metal band.

So what is the connection between all this mumbojumbo, yada-yada thing with what's going on this week?

Well, in a way, it sort of inspired me. Not from the quirky accent he used to say "no music, no dream" - which frankly sounded more like "no mew-seakooh, no do-ree-mooh" , but more in the idea of hitting you guys hard with, not just one, but a bunch of rock concerts! To heat the whole thing up, or at least to heat you up, Java Soulnation is on the go for two days from Oct. 30 to 31.

It has the word "Soul" in it, but "pop alternative" and "R&B" are what it's all about. World renowned artists like The Ting Tings, Arrested Development, DJ Spooky, the legendary DMC of Run DMC and the electrifying Tortured Soul will give you the jump, backed up by a selection of profound Indonesian artists like Bondan Prakoso and Fade2Black, Maliq & D'Essentials and Ras Muhamad.

Get your tickets now at www.javasoulnation.com and you might still get the discounted daily pass at Rp 200,000, the two-day pass at Rp 300,000 and the special show The Ting Tings pass at Rp 175,000. Get them on the spot and you will have to pay Rp 250,000 for the daily pass, Rp 400,000 for the two day pass and Rp 225,000 for special show. That if the tickets aren't sold out by then.

For fans of Arch Enemy, they're on their way here on their Asia Tour 2009. It's going to be brutal. But if you insist, they'll be burning the stage of Tennis Indoor Senayan on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be bought at Solucites (7262183), Aquarius Mahakam (7208413), Aquarius Pondok Indah (7238759),www.detik.com (7944473), Raja Karcis (8282137), Duta Suara (5825035) or the beloved mother of rock-maniacpsychos, Ibu Dibyo (31931178).

News on Java Musikindo has leaked that it will bring Placebo and Trivium to town. For those who don't know them, ask Google -- and share the revelation. While those who are in the know, Placebo's coming is still unconfi rmed, but Trivium is scheduled to rawk the stage on Feb. 11, 2010.

A long way to go, I know, but the presale period for the concert will run from Oct, 27 to Nov. 6, 2009 with a ticket for tribune priced at Rp 185,000 (normal rate Rp 245.000) and festival at Rp 235,000 (normal rate Rp 295,000). Go to www.jakartaconcerts. com for presales and www.javamusikindo.com (021-57988623-5) for information.

I'm not going to ask "what are you waiting for?" I'm not going to shout "Rock On!!" In fact, I'm going to leave you with a revelation, and that is: "no music, no dream". Oh, how I wish more Swedish metal bands were coming to town.
