DENPASAR: Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika asked the public to be on alert over the rising tide of crimes that had shocked the island in the last few months.

"If you see a suspicious person or individuals around please notify the police immediately," he said Sunday before hundreds who had flocked to the governor residence for Galungan and Kuningan celebrations.

Pastika recalled that recently several high-profile crimes had taken place in the resort island. In late September, a Japanese woman. Rikasano, was brutally murdered in Kuta.

The most recent high-profile crime was the robbing of West Denpasar branch of BRI bank Friday.

The robbers made away with more than Rp 290 million.

"Regardless of the severity of the crime, any crime taking place in Bali will have a major impact since this island is a world-renowned tourist destination," he said.

He expressed his appreciation to the local police, which in less than one week had succeeded in apprehending Rikasano's alleged killer. - JP
