SMS: SBY's cabinet

A- A A+

Your comments on the appointment of members of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's cabinet, most of whom come from political parties.

As scheduled, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has announced his Cabinet one day after his inauguration. As usual our experts have their say about the appointed ministers either negatively or positively. I would rather give the ministers time and a fair chance to prove themselves.

They have signed a "political contract", which in essence is a "performance bond", and they will be dismissed if they are not up to their job. To be successful, new ministers first of all have to be in full control of their department's staff and secondly establish good coordination with their colleague ministers.

There is no time just to enjoy their position because a lot of work lies ahead.

President SBY has to accommodate candidates with both political and professional backgrounds.

It is logical that SBY has to recruit most members of his Cabinet from political parties because the President established a coalition before the presidential election.

He has to accommodate them.

I think there are too many members of Cabinet coming from political parties. Therefore, I am sure that they will give their loyalty to the nation first, or to their political parties.

Although most cabinet members come from political parties, it doesn't mean that they will just work for the interests of their political parties.

I hope the ministers will make real contributions to the nation.

SBY and his advisors believe that they can bring in raw diamonds and shape them out to be valuable assets to the country. It is too early to say, who is capable or not capable, that is why there is 100 days to show. The ability and talents are in newly appointed ministers.

It will show in this 100 days period. SBY cannot afford to keep non-performing ministers and he will have good reasons to remove them, whichever political parties they come from. Let us watch. The whip is with SBY, he knows to steer the government on the right route. It is now the responsibility of the people to give the necessary motivation to the ministers.

In the previous period we saw Sri Mulyani and Mari Pangestu who were newcomers. They performed well to stay on to the second period. It is now time for us to unearth new talents in this period. So, wait and see who will be shaped into a shiny diamond. SBY can. He took high risks to pick his No 2, who was not well known, to join him in the presidential election.

All of us know what the outcome was: victory. He believes in his ability to shape people and we must give him time to do it. Criticizing is necessary only if needs to be, which is not always. All ministers know, the Indonesian media has freedom and every movement of the ministers will be monitored. Any wrong move will be exposed within seconds by the media.

So, being a minister is not as easy as before. Take care ministers - God bless you.
