SERANG: The Banten tripartite team assessing wages and worker welfare in the province has proposed an increase in the provincial monthly minimum wage for 2010.

Team leader Eutik Suharta, the head of the provincial manpower agency, said Wednesday the rate was expected to increase from Rp 917,500 (US$91) to Rp 955,300 - around 4 percent.

"The proposal was made based on our survey of the minimum cost of living in Banten," he said.

Eutik said the new wage would still need approval from Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah before it came into effect on Jan. 1.

Commenting on the proposal, Tangerang regency National Labor Association chairman Ahmad Syaukani said the increase was less than expected.

"We'll make sure the governor hears our demand and gives us a higher minimum wage; a 30 percent increase. We just want a decent living." - JP
