JAKARTA: Simon Santoso struggled into the second round of the French Super Series on Wednesday, where he is bidding for a second straight title after winning in Denmark last week.
The Indonesian shuttler lost the first set 21-8 against Sho Sasaki of Japan, before wrapping up the last two games 21-16 21-14.
He next faces sixth seed Joachim Persson of Denmark on Thursday.
In the women's singles, Indonesia's Adriyanti Firdasari had an easier start with a win 21-16, 21-16 win over Ukraine's Larisa Griga, but has a tough task ahead against Danish champion and fourth seed Tine Rasmussen on Thursday.
Indonesian mixed doubles pairs Hendra Aprida Gunawan/Vita Marissa, the seventh seeds, and Fran Kurniawan Teng/Pia Zebadiah Bernadet will play each other after winning their opening-round games. Men's doubles first seeds Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan also progressed, but Yonathan Dasuki/Rian Sukmawan did not make it into the second round. - JP
