President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged that the wiretap records reportedly citing his name in an alleged plot against two deputies from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) be opened to the public.

Yudhoyono said people needed to know who taped the conversations, what they actually talked about, and whether the records did indeed imply a plot against Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto – the two KPK deputy chiefs whom the police arrested on Thursday.

“Open up [the records], explain the contents, and carry out a thorough investigation. They said my name had been cited; I don’t know anything about that. I’ve never communicated [with the people recorded].

“I’ve been hurt; awfully hurt,” Yudhoyono told a press conference at the Presidential Palace.

He added he had ordered National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri to investigate the wiretap records that KPK chairman Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean claimed to have.

Although the KPK had not released them to the public, what are believed to be the transcripts of the records have been circulating in the media.

The wiretap records are allegedly of conversations between middleman Ary Muladi, Anggodo Widjojo (the brother of graft suspect Anggoro Widjojo) and several high-ranking officials from the Attorney General’s Office and the police, as they apparently discussed framing Bibit and Chandra.

In one part of the conversation, between an unidentified woman and a man believed to be Anggodo, Yudhoyono was alleged to have given his support for action against them.

In the press conference, the President added that after the contents of the records had been verified, the police needed to investigate who did the wiretapping.

“Is wiretapping in line with the law? Imagine if people could buy wiretapping equipment and record who they liked. There will be a sea of wiretapping and it is against the law and the regulations,” he said.
