YOGYAKARTA: The Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) in Yogyakarta will this month stage an Indonesian arts festival in Portugal in an effort to help develop Indonesia's image overseas.

The festival will take place from Nov. 6-17, 2009 and involve 40 Indonesian participants including lecturers and students.

"The program will be funded by the Directorate of Higher Education at the National Education Ministry, which provided Rp 1 billion in grants for overseas arts events," ISI rector Soeprapto Soedjono said.

"The Indonesian Festival is also intended to promote Indonesian arts and culture abroad and strengthen cooperation with arts institutions overseas, particularly Portugal," he said.

He said the festival would feature workshops and various art performances, such as puppet theater shows, gamelan concerts and batik fashion shows. -JP
