SOUTH TANGERANG: Cheers and laughter filled the air at the Deutsche International Schulle (DIS) in Bumi Serpong Damai, South Tangerang on Friday morning when some 150 elementary school students took part in traditional contests there.
"Today, the students celebrate Indonesia Day and this is an annual activity the school holds every year," Evi Royati, the school's public relation manager told The Jakarta Post.
She said Indonesia Day was aimed at integrating the cultures of DIS students who are mostly the children of Germans nationals living in Jakarta, and Indonesian children who study at the school.
The four-hour activity was filled with a number of traditional contests, which are usually held during the commemoration of Independence Day, such as bakiak (wooden sandal) race, sack race, cracker-eating contest, banana spoon-feeding contest, moving straw, and many others.
"The atmosphere was fun and the children were very happy to learn while playing," Evi Royati added. - JP
