German Chancellor Angela Merkel will urge the U.S.
Congress to support an international pact to combat climate change
in her address to the House and Senate next week.
Merkel departs Monday for a two-day visit to Washington, where
she is to meet with President Barack Obama, as well as address both
the House and the Senate.
The German chancellor said Saturday she would use the opportunity
to push for the United States to support a follow-on agreement to
the Kyoto Protocol that expires in 2012. A new agreement is to be
hammered out in Copenhagen from Dec.3 to 14.
