AKARTA: For some parents, the entertainment television programs of today are nothing but a bad influence on their children. Singer Marcell Siahaan certainly thinks so.
Marcell says he monitors closely what his 5-year-old son Keenan Avalokita Kirana watches on TV, for the simple reason that he doesn't want the little boy to act "lebay".
Lebay is Indonesian slang that refers to behaving in an exaggerated or excessive manner.
"I don't want my son to watch anything lebay because I don't want him to become a lebay and dramatic person," the 32-year-old said after the recent launch of the LI TV channel in Jakarta.
"The thing is, there are just so many TV shows that are so fake and over-dramatized," added Marcell, the former husband of singer-turned-writer Dewi Lestari.
Among the shows he was referring to are those whose presenters act and talk in a lebay manner.
"Those shows are *vulgar' in the sense that the presenters just dramatize everything - the way they act and talk, as well as treat others," said Marcell, who's now married to Singaporean actress Rima Melati Adams. "Besides, there are also shows that are full of slander, exaggerating the whole deal.
"I won't let my son watch them," he added. "I want him to have healthy TV treats." - JP
