SMS: Messy airport

Your comments on the terrible condition of Soekarno-Hatta Airport which Transportation Minister Freddy Numberi complained about during his inspection of the international airport.

With air travel is booming, passengers are people with all kinds of traditions and habits. Most of them consider the facilities at the airport perfectly clean, compared to what they have at home.

The cleaners, who are on duty around the clock, complain that a lot of people don't know how to use the facilities properly.

The management continuously maintains and repairs the facilities, but the work is done by contractors who are appointed through tenders with the lowest price, which results in poor workmanship. Strict control and huge penalties for offenders will hopefully solve this problem.

The airport in Jakarta has increased its airport taxes but the management has failed to significantly improve their services, including the cleanness of its toilets.

Toilets are still dirty, wet, dimly lit, painted in dull colors and there is no toilet paper at all.

Terminal 3 is better because it is new, but the toilets are also wet and it still has no toilet paper.

It is true cleanliness is one of the most important things, as well as safety precautions. Safety awareness among us all is what we need now on land, sea and in the air transportation system.

The former vice president Moh Hatta said corruption had become a culture in Indonesia. The messy state of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, as well as in other parts of Indonesia, has become a culture too.

To change a culture takes a very long time. The only thing we Indonesian can do is just take it for granted and be extra patient. Sorry that's all I can say.
